Doing our part in communities during COVID-19

At Pembina, we want to do our part during these challenging times. Giving back and supporting the communities where we live, work and play is one of our fundamental values.
As a result of the pandemic, we have seen charities and non-profits suffer from decreases in revenue and increases in demand for services. To support these organizations, Pembina has invested nearly $600,000 towards COVID-19 relief and has focused its efforts on five key priority areas: food security, frontline healthcare and first responders, social service continuity, mental health services and well-being, and education.

To support the community where our head office is located, Pembina donated $100,000 to the United Way of Calgary’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund, which is in partnership with The City of Calgary (including the Calgary Emergency Management Agency) and Alberta Health Services. To date, the Community Response Fund has supported 175 local agencies that are working diligently to keep Calgarians safe and well during the COVID-19 public health crisis.

To support other centres where we operate, Pembina donated $100,000 to several Response Funds with regional or provincial reach, including Central Alberta United Way COVID-19 Community Response Fund, Community Foundation of SE Alberta, United Way Northern BC COVID-19 Relief Fund, and the Food Bank's Saskatchewan COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund.

Recognizing the importance of organizations responding to the pandemic on a local level, our Community Action Teams, who act as Pembina community ambassadors and review local funding requests, also provided funding to local food banks and shelters, hospitals, mental health organizations, seniors centres and family support centres. These services are needed now more than ever, and we want to do our part to support them.

Pembina also provided funding to more than 25 Indigenous communities in our operating areas to assist with their relief efforts. The funds provided will go towards critical supports for the communities, including community food hampers, cleaning and medical supplies, mental health initiatives, as well as personal protective equipment.

How we’re protecting our other stakeholders during COVID-19
Continuing safe, reliable operations
We’re providing essential energy to fuel people’s lives while they stay home.

Pembina has taken steps to determine the essential staff and critical infrastructure required to ensure uninterrupted service to our customers while maintaining the safety of our assets, employees and other stakeholders. We are focused on processing and transporting the maximum amount of product for our customers, thus supporting their cashflow.

Employee wellness and return to office
Safety is our first priority at Pembina and we continue to take steps to protect the health of our staff and the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pembina is committed to meeting or exceeding all requirements set by government jurisdictions where we operate. We have restricted business travel, cancelled large group meetings and have limited the number of employees returning to the office. We continuously seek feedback from our staff and prioritize an approach that reflects the mutual interests of our staff and the Corporation.

Pembina recognizes the importance of mental health and well-being – especially during these challenging times. In April, employees enjoyed an extended four-day long weekend and have been encouraged to take their vacation, while minding physical distancing guidelines. A daily status check-in system was also implemented to monitor employee wellness and provided our emergency response and occupational health teams with important information on the health and safety of our people.
Pembina's commitment to investing in communities
Communities put their trust in Pembina and permit us to operate in their backyards. Through our Community Investment Program, we honour this relationship and give back to the communities where we live, work and play.

Pembina partners with non-profit and charitable organizations that are based in, or support, the communities where we operate. Within this framework, we focus our investments on organizations that improve access to education, protect or preserve the environment, promote safety, create community space and encourage wellness.

In 2019, Pembina invested $10 million and contributed nearly 8,000 volunteer hours to create a positive impact in our communities.
