Build Canada Now: A Renewed Call for Action
On September 15, Canadian energy leaders, including Scott Burrows, issued the third Build Canada Now open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney. This letter builds on the momentum of the previous two letters, reiterating the urgent need for policy changes to unlock Canada’s energy potential and strengthen our economic sovereignty.
While we acknowledge the progress made by the Federal Government, including the establishment of the Major Projects Office, the Indigenous Advisory Council, and the initial list of projects of national significance, more decisive action is required to achieve the vision of Canada as a global energy superpower.
The letter outlines five key priorities for the Federal Government:
Simplify regulations: Overhaul the Federal Impact Assessment Act and repeal the West Coast tanker ban to streamline processes and provide clarity.
Shorten project approval timelines: Approve projects within months, not years, to restore investor confidence.
Commit to production growth: Eliminate the unlegislated emissions cap to allow the sector to grow and reach its full potential.
Create a competitive fiscal framework: Repeal the Federal carbon levy on large emitters and allow provinces to set regulations that protect competitiveness.
Support Indigenous investment opportunities: Scale up Indigenous loan guarantees to create ownership opportunities and ensure communities benefit from resource development.
At Pembina, we believe that energy is fundamental to Canada’s economic sovereignty and global influence. The Build Canada Now initiative aligns with our strategic priorities by advocating for the removal of barriers to growth, innovation, and infrastructure development.
We remain committed to working with the Federal Government to achieve this shared vision for Canada’s energy future.
