Inspiring our future workforce with Skills Canada Alberta
Skills Canada Alberta is a non-profit organization that advances youth and community engagement in skilled trade and technology careers across Canada. Each year, Skills Canada Alberta hosts the Provincial Skills Canada Competition at the Edmonton Expo Center, bringing together students, educators and industry representatives. This event gives students an opportunity to showcase their skills while learning about career pathways available in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and beyond.
As part of the event, Pembina volunteers help students explore careers in the energy industry at “Skills City.” This highly anticipated volunteer opportunity is a favourite among our teams, bringing employees together to support hands-on learning. Using interactive pipeline and fractionation models, Pembina volunteers demonstrate how these systems work, answer questions, and share information about careers at Pembina. Team members from Whitecourt, Grande Prairie, Drayton Valley, Sherwood Park and Redwater support the event over three days.
These volunteers also participate in the Girls Exploring Trades & Technology (GETT) Conference, providing hands-on learning experiences and encouraging more young women to consider careers in the skilled trades.
Bringing energy education to classrooms and communities
Pembina also partners with Inside Education to support energy and environmental learning for students and teachers. They deliver engaging, curriculum-aligned programs across Alberta and northeastern British Columbia, including classroom resources, field experiences, and teacher development opportunities.
Through programs like A+ for Energy, grants are provided to support creative, student-led energy education projects in classrooms. Pembina employees also contribute their expertise by participating in student summits and helping evaluate grant applications.
Beyond Canada, Pembina supports hands-on learning opportunities such as the T4 Tools, Trades, Torque, and Tech Summits in North Dakota, which connects students with industry professionals and introduces them to skilled trades and technical careers.
Additional partnerships with schools and post-secondary institutions help expand access to STEM and trades education through initiatives such as mobile training labs, classroom STEM kits, and programs that support rural and Indigenous communities.
